Juniors and Seniors left for Internship and Endersession this past week. These are unique programs at High Tech High. You might be asking what are Internship, Endersession and Intersession.
  • Juniors spend 4 weeks working in a job site 30 hours per week. They will also complete a mini project that benefits the workplace.
  • Seniors will spend 5 weeks either in an internship, traveling, working on a passion project, earning a certificate or in credit recovery.
  • Freshman and Sophomores spend 10 days in an immersive experience.
You can find out more about the programs by watching Ask Andrew from last night where HTH Alums Lucy Conover and Pierce Maginnis shared their experience or this "What is internship" video and check out the Intersession Handbook.

Is War Human Nature?

By HTH Student Journalist Lucía C. López

The world is at a fork in the road at the moment. Countries are at odds with each other as we watch from abroad. At times like these, it can make one wonder, is war a part of human nature?

Everything has a beginning, including war. An article from ScientificAmerican.com reports evidence of conflict between societies dating all the way back to 12,000 BC in Egypt. The article also reports more concrete evidence of war within communities located in Europe dating back to 9700 BC after the Ice Age. The beginning of war is fuzzy since conflict begins at different times varying by location. However, ScientificAmerican.com explains that war was not always what we know it as today.

What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
These things are the advice I received from my dad, advice is to please remain organized and use Google calendar, put down every class and event and write out how long it will take, then put each assignment down and put what time you going to do each one and how long it will take. Don't be afraid to questions or ask for help, most people will have the same question, nobody has full knowledge of something when you first learn a subject, and when something is confusing or you don't fully understand the concept yet it is very important to ask the teachers to clarify so you can learn more and continue to grow and learn. Here is a quote I found about Knowledge and learning that I think many of you would greatly value "Knowledge, I will continually seek opportunities For learning and growth" (D&C 88:118) Never be afraid to ask for feedback, from your teachers in fact every time you turn in an assignment make sure to ask your teachers for feedback on where to improve because when you ask for feedback you have the opportunity to grow and improve.
PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWS
Congratulations to our first CARPE/CABE Parent Leadership Project cohort! Parents from HTH International and HTH participated in a 12-week 2-hour evening course after their long day of work hours! What inspiration, what an admiration for them to give their time to learn about what it takes to navigate the school systems to create a positive bridge to higher education after graduating from high school.

Thank you to HTH Alum Samantha Fiallo and former HTH Teacher Brian Delgado for joining us for the Most Likely talkback. If you missed it, you can watch the recording here. You can rent the documentary anytime on Amazon Prime Video.

The film follows a 9th-grade Humanities class at High Tech High in order to examine the growing shortcomings of conventional education methods in today's innovative world and explore compelling new approaches like Project-Based Learning.

STORM BASEBALL

From Coach Joe - "HTH Storm Baseball finished their season 9-13, falling a few games short of CIF playoffs. The team added a number of new players this year and grew to end the season with Varsity and JV teams. This season of growth was a great improvement over the previous season. The future looks bright for this young team which will return all players except for Senior Chris Austin, who was a key contributor all over the diamond during his HTH career. (See Senior Spotlight story below). The team would like to thank Chris for his years of play, appreciate the dedicated four members of the Coaching Staff, and thank parents for helping to make the season happen."

STORM SOFTBALL
Storm Varsity Softball played Morse this past week. It was a close exciting game featuring two Division 1 softball commits, one from each team. It was a solid performance from many HTH players including Senior Jocelynn Tapia (2 for 2, 1 RBI), Sophomore Mikayla Manns (2BB, 2 Runs), Freshman Imani Wolfolk (1-4, 2 RBI). Freshman Alexa Aranda (1 RBI), and Junior Riley Lenahan Struck out 5 and added 1 Run and a stolen base.

HTHSD player of the game Tiare Rieger #5 (West Point Softball Commit) went 3 for 3 with 2 homeruns, 1 single, an intentional walk, 3 RBI's, 3 runs, and 2 put outs. Unfortunately, Morse held on for the win 9-8. With one game left in the regular season, #5 Tiare currently holds the HTHSD single season batting avg (.667) record. Former leader (.600) Rachel Warrens 16-17 season.

STORM SOCCER

From Coach Rhee: Our STORM Varsity Soccer Boys competed in InterFC’s annual all-day beach soccer tournament on Saturday. It was a fun opportunity to try a different side of the sport while getting to spend lots of time in the sun and sand outside of club soccer. The team looks forward to participating again next year! If you’re interested in receiving boys soccer program information and updates for the 2022-2023 season, please contact Head Coach Victoria at vrhee@hightechhigh.org.

STORM GOLF
Noah Leary Ceder competed in the City Championship tournament at Balboa Park golf course. Noah was also one of six golfers selected first team all league for the City League that we compete in.

Jake Delisant, Brody Rogers, Dean Beiser (not pictured) and Rey Hopping competed in the BTR tournament at National City golf course.

STORM TENNIS
The Storm Tennis Team recently sent Kellan Kim and Sergio Pallares to compete in the CIF Individuals Championship Tournament.
They were knocked out in the first round by tough opponents, but still managed to put up a fight.

We went 15-5 to end off the season with more than 12 players, each earning some playing time.

STORM TRACK
From Coach Amiee: “We had a big weekend in Track! Lots of winners, new PR’s, and after a great day at city finals, we are headed to CIF!!

We even had new atheists join our top 10 for historical race times!!”

STORM BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Volleyball team! They went to CIF to compete against Del Lago Academy in Escondido. It was a close match and they should be proud of an incredible season! The team says goodbye to the seniors, we wish them all the best!
From Coach O'Kelley - The team left it all out there on the court and I am so proud of them.  Nicholas left his legacy with the team and was able to start/build a successful program with a strong foundation.  He will be missed and I know he will be back in the coming years to watch and support his team!
