HTH HAPPENINGS THIS PAST WEEK!
Senior Exhibition 2022
Senior Exhibition was a huge success! Wow! Amanda/Ryan team exhibited their autobiographical novels written by their future selves and meet the Class of 2022 in their documentary "A Page Out Of Our Book" directed by student Noah McDougall.
During Furniture Exists, students in HTH workshops took on several iterations of the design & build process to cultivate their skills around planning, collaboration, craftsmanship, reflection and revision as necessary to create professional final products: furniture. These skills, each of which will be an applicable tool in future endeavors, were supplemented with an existential exploration of the question: Why does furniture exist? Of course we could answer this by simply identifying whoever made it, but additional questions lurk in the background if we desire a more exhaustive answer: Why does that person build furniture? How is their society structured so they may do so? How have dynamic ecological conditions, over deep time, been an influence? How did that person evolve, or even come to be alive, at all? Or have a planet to live on? Or a universe to live in?
The project was also featured in a story that ran on KPBS-TV. You can take a gallery walk of the projects in the video above and see the KPBS story below.
The 10th grade JAV team visited USD Chicano Studies department and Dr. Alberto Pulido, since we read his book in class! We are studying Chicano Lowrider Car Clubs, the history, adversity, and cultural elements of this awesome group of people!

We are also hosting a private lowrider car show on campus May 19th with the United Lowrider Coalition.
10th grade Project Partner Cynthia Ellis Topsey presented at the United Nations this past week representing the Garifuna Nation from Belize. You might remember she visited High Tech High last semester.

Staff Appreciation Week! Thank you to all the HTH Families who donated so generously to fund this week of goodies. The staff enjoyed a picnic lunch catered by Luna Grill, healthy snacks, Maya's cookies, a bagel breakfast, succulents in super cute little pots and Costco Gas Cards! Thank you to parents Kathy Saucedo and Ellen Schlage for coordinating. #hthpride #ittakesavillage
Did you know that all HTH students are required to do an internship in their junior year? It's unique to HTH and a very valuable experience.
Our juniors are looking for internships now. Do you have a small business or know someone who does and would be open to taking on an HTH student as an intern May 18-June 17?
We have several students looking for general business type internships. If you are interested, please email Stephanie at santin@hightechhigh.org or Kalle at Kpalmer@hightechhigh.org
Thank you so much for your support!

Starting May 1, all riders 18 and under can ride MTS and NCTD services for FREE through the SANDAG Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program.

To be eligible for the Youth Opportunity Pass, riders 18 and under must have a Youth PRONTO app account, or a PRONTO Youth card, and travel with proof of eligibility. (Kids 5 and under ride MTS and NCTD free when accompanied by a fare paying adult, and do not need a card or proof of eligibility.)

The Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program ends June 2023.

From Coach Rhee: Our boys varsity soccer team had a fantastic time at the inaugural End-of-the-Year Banquet last Saturday. Players and families enjoyed excellent catering from Banyan Kitchen and reconnected after a few months apart since the end of our season in February. The underclassmen spoke highly of each senior in attendance, and the seniors shared poignant reflections and advice with the rest of the team. Thank you to ALL our supporters who filled the stands, home and away, for us this year. We look forward to celebrating with each other again next year after our winter 2022-2023 season! HTH Surf State Championships 2022

HTH Surfers on the Podium at the California State High School Surfing Championships

The Western Surfing Association's Scholastic Surf Series State Championships were held this past weekend in Huntington Beach with surfers from up and down the State. Four HTH Surf Team qualifying riders competed from HTH (Zach Frazee), HTHMA (Emily Kurth), HTHI (Logan Moore), and HTH Mesa (Garrett Bedford). All surfers are to be commended for their performance representing San Diego and HTH amongst the best high school surfers in California! In the end, Garrett advanced to the semi-finals. Logan Moore advanced to the finals and placed 4th overall in the State for Body Board, and Zach Frazee advanced to the finals and placed 3rd overall in the State for Longboard. Furthermore, Zach Frazee received the first annual Scholastic Surf Series Sportsmanship Award provided by Tom Gibbons (founder of the National Scholastic Surfing Association) in recognition of outstanding sportsmanship while surfing for High Tech High during the 2021-2022 season. We couldn’t be more proud of all of our team riders and grateful for their families who supported them along the way. We also want to thank our coaches and team supporters who graciously donated their time throughout the season. See more pics on the team website here [https://bit.ly/HTHSurfSite]
