HTH HAPPENINGS

9th graders in Lisa-Joe-Shelby’s team crafted prototype shadow puppets, for our Folklorists Project Exhibition next month.  We learned and played with puppeteer artist and educator Jason James Johnson in two workshops, sponsored by our HTH Parent Association, Bocón Arts, and the SD Puppetry Guild!

The seniors have been busy these past two weeks! They visited La Jolla and the Contemporary Art Museum, The Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park, and created handmade plates and bowls in Ceramics.
Thank you to the Parent Association and HTH community for providing the funds for more clay!
More than 50 11th and 12th grade students interviewed with 20 companies and organizations on campus this week for Internship and Endersession opportunities. Both 11th and 12th grade students are required to do a 4 week Internship type experience before they graduate.
FROM THE JOURNALISM CLUB

What Are the Roots of HTH?

By HTH Student Journalist Mia Dahlgren

At a certain point during the past couple months, I asked myself where the concept of X-block came from. A 40-minute period twice a week where students go to a club-class hybrid that the teacher chooses to host was so normal for us, but why?

This simple question should have had a short answer (and article), but it blossomed into a fascinating and deep origin story for my school.

I reached out to Rob Riordan, who was one of the founding members of the first High Tech High school.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Academic Coach

Why did you choose to work in education?
I felt a move to education was and should be a very conscious decision so I worked at a learning center only to be promoted to manager in 5 weeks. I worked in Vietnamese communities of Kearny mesa, Linda Vista, and College for 2 years after deciding to gain my masters in teaching and really go for it.
What are your hopes for this school year?
My hopes stretch as far to simply gaining the trust and respect of my students. I hope to be an advocate for several students and bring those students to ultimately making the choice to advocate for themselves once they feel ready.
What do you love most about HTH?
I love the freedom that is allowed of teachers. It's inspiring to have such brilliant and unwaveringly brave teachers that reach to the deep corners of issues that students can explore the opinions, ideas, and interests of the students of HTH.
Tell us about a memory you have from high school?
I had a favorite teacher. He and I started the theater program at my school. We produced The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Our Town, Dance Like Nobody is Watching, Various shorts of David Ives from "All in the Timing." I began an improv club at my school where we produced a "Who's Line is it Anyway?" style show at our local mall. It made high school more enriching to produce these works and to explore my leadership at this young age.
What do you like to do outside of school?
I like to read, travel, surf, and backpack.

And thank you to Sensations Salud, LLC.
for being a community partner for a third year!
