What’s So Different About High Tech High Anyway?

By Katrina Schwartz FEBRUARY 6, 2018

Walking onto a High Tech High campus is like entering a workshop. Our tour guide, sophomore Caroline Egler, pointed out classrooms that supposedly housed physics or humanities or biology, but most students weren’t in those rooms. They were in the hallways working on projects, huddled around computers together, or even working at desks elevated 8 feet above the ground so they towered over the floor. Students seem to be working with purpose, even if it’s not immediately obvious what they’re doing. The scene is chaotic, but not out of control.  Read more..... https://ww2.kqed.org/mindshift/2018/02/06/whats-so-different-about-high-tech-high-anyway/

First Generation College-Going HTH Seniors

The transition from high school to college is exciting and it can also be very nerve-wracking. Research shows that students whose parents haven't earned a university degree can benefit from having a mentor to help prepare them for what they will encounter in college (Tierney & Garcia, 2014; Vargas, 2004; Zimmerman, 2000, to name a few). High Tech High's First Generation Mentorship Program pairs first generation staff & faculty with first generation college-going seniors. We meet monthly as a group to build a support network in this transitional time. Mentees also meet one-on-one with their mentors each month to discuss an array of topics related to college. These meetings provide mentees with additional information and support while forging close-knit relationships between mentor and mentee. We expect for these relationships to continue beyond high school, especially as mentees begin to navigate college life. This experience was created by HTHer Sofia Tannenhaus.
