“ Good Trouble" is an audio play and public "performance protest" with music, poetry, verbatim dialogue, and audience participation. This world premiere borrows its title from the incredible words of John Lewis and explores how youth activism is changing the landscape of our nation.”

With distanced learning in place off campus right now, many of our students are needing more social interaction. We are not acting on behalf of the school, but rather a group of parents who would like to provide some small group social interaction for our students.  We would like to explore interest in setting up ways for students to socialize in small groups within a close geographical area and build HTH community. Please complete the following survey to express interest in participation in a small group setting. Your information will be shared with others who are interested. Deep Dive Into Two Weeks of Sundial Labs

By: Lucía López

Nobody really takes the time to stay with the light of the Sun and look at how it flows past us every second of the day and I had the chance to analyze and use math in a unique way to take a deep dive into this. My ninth grade physics class has conducted two experiments to measure how the Sun moves with a homemade Sundial. According to Britannica, Sundials "...indicates the time of day by the position of the shadow of some object exposed to the sun's rays." It was a fascinating experience observing for the first time how quickly the Sun moves when recording data. We usually don't watch the movement of shadows or where they end up, but the lab forced me to think and analyze the movements and time such as when the Solar Noon in a day occurs. It was very confusing at first how I would use the angles and data that I collected, but after conducting them, I feel that I have more of an understanding of Sun patterns and Zenith Angles.

From HTH Math Teacher Sarah Strong

The theme for this month’s Math newsletter is “understanding mathematical thinking”. The ways that we notice and highlight student mathematical thinking is a necessary follow up to the ways that we approach a healthy math identity (the theme of last month’s newsletter). The two are inextricably linked because students build healthy and whole math identities as they formulate and share their thinking with others and have their ideas discussed. High Tech High is committed to this type of student-centered learning.

From HTH Environmental Science Teacher John Santos

“Rigor” shouldn’t mean “some kids fail”

A buddy of mine, Jorge Cabrera, he taught at High Tech High. And he and I met up one time for dinner. And when we were talking, he was telling me about this experience he had where he was asked to teach summer school. And on the first day of summer school, he walked into the class and just noticed immediately that it looked really different than what he was used to seeing within the typical academic year. They were almost entirely students of color and predominantly male Latinos in that class.
