HTH HAPPENINGS
Ari’s 9th Grade Physics Lab exploring frame of reference and speed.

Lisa/Joe/ OG 9th grade team meeting 3rd grade buddies to get acquainted for Folk Lore/Tales project.

9th grade students on Joe/Shelby/Lisa's team are entering a quarter-long project, seeing the marriage of physics, math, and storytelling.

They are working with project collaborators from cultures across the globe, designing wooden "crankie box" puppet theaters, driven by gears and a crank and also lit by student-created electrical circuit work.

Students will present final storytelling performances, having integrated math, physics, and humanities into the project. We will perform for our elementary school partners, and for the public, with the crankie boxes being shared with a community partner to live on beyond this project.

Chase/Juli/Ari 9th grade team hiked to Kwaay Paay Peak in Mission Trails!

11th grade students in Jesse Wade Robinson’s Biology class have been learning about and experimenting with DNA. Students have tested their DNA using a gel electrophoresis test that they conducted themselves. They also experimented with and studied how DNA can be seen and observed using detergent and ethanol. This is all in preparation for the student’s upcoming project with the Innocence Project, where students will study how DNA can help solve or exonerate someone in a crime.

As a school community, we are constantly reflecting on and refining our practice. I would like to invite you to share with us your thoughts about HTH. The anonymous survey should take about 15 minutes and is administered by YouthTruth – a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the country.
Please take the survey before it closes on January 27th by clicking on this link

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Alumni Give Back By Helping at Internship Launch Day

“It’s like coming full circle” says Lentor Nash, a High Tech High alumnus, as he walks the halls of his alma mater 20 years after graduating from high school. Lentor returned to campus on this day to recruit 11th grade students for internships. It is part of Internship Launch Day at the Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High. A day where more than 25 community members from Scripps Research, the City of San Diego, Tesla, Living Coast Discovery Center, San Diego courts, and parent volunteers talk with our 11th grade students about careers, internships and their hopes for their future. Some of the organizations also interviewed students on site for internships.

All HTH students are required to do a one month internship in their junior year where they work 30 hours a week on site to learn workplace skills and gain valuable experience in a job-related field.

Lentor, Class of 2003, returned to HTH to recruit interns for the City of San Diego. He works in the City Attorney’s office as an administrator.
