Culture, People, Projects

“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

― Eleanor Roosevelt

One of the unique experiences offered at HTH is 11th grade Internship and 12th grade Endersession. HTH students spend 4-5 weeks working in an organization or business to gain experience. These experiences help students decide their career path, explore passions, gain experience and stories for college essays, network and much more. Here are some examples of what our students are doing this year!

12th grade Endersession:

  • RJ White, who is interning with a financial analyst in downtown San Diego.
  • Andrea Baez, Julianna Mendez - research into treatments for addiction - Skaggs Institute for chemical biology
  • Rachel Warrens - JP Longball
  • Noah Ahrens - Pride, marketing
  •  Irwin, Nathan, Nate, and Ethan creating art at HTH
  • Jonas Jacobs working at the Makerspace as a general workspace manager and teacher. He's also designing and creating his own projects there.
11th grade Internships:

  • Lily Tran learns about marine biology and community outreach and education during her internship with Ocean Discovery Institute
  • Alex Lopez interns with Clearview Marine Canvas and hits the water with his mentor week one!
  • Stephanie Cortez-Bruno works with her mentor at The Studio Door, a gallery and studio collective in Hillcrest.

Inclusion specialists Shawn, Judy and Ashlen talked to parents about Parenting The Positive Discipline Way. Helpful hints for empowering versus enabling.

These are enabling responses:

1. Doing too much for them

2. Giving them too much

3. Bribing versus rewarding

4. Overprotecting

5. Hovering

Our definition of empowering is turning over control to your kids so they have power over their own lives.

These are empowering responses:

1. Show faith in your child

2. Respect privacy

3. Express your limits

4. Listen without fixing, discounting or judging

5. Control your own behavior

HTH Teachers enjoy lunch brought in by HTH student Dania Castillo's family from Arrivederci Restaurant in Hillcrest. Thank you!

Congratulations to 11th grade HTH student Aaron Price! He was named the Harvard Alumni group San Diego Chapter Outstanding Junior.

The 9th grade student-run music festival on May 30th was a huge success! We had performances by 7 student bands from the Carrion/Wolfrey/Chase team. Our festival featured performances from Foxtide, Rain on Fridays, The Mad Hatters and a special DJ set from Arabian Prince. The students sold jewelery and other items plus food truck were on site. Hope you were able to make it!
