Very thankful for John Santos and Pat Holder for taking time out of their busy teaching lives at HTH to teach Troy woodworking skills and help him make precision cuts for his Eagle Project.  - HTH Parent Ellen Schlage
Current seniors met with some HTH alumni (Taylor Clark, Adrian Maya, Lucy Conover, and Kyna Airriess). Though some of the questions were about math in college specifically, the panel spoke broadly about the experiences in their first-year college and in doing college online during a pandemic. It was AWESOME! If you're at all interested, here is the recording:)   Passcode: NG0Xu$8y
This semester, 11th-grade students in humanities are taking a Yale class "Science of Well-Being" (offered free online through Coursera). They're creating infographics to show their learning and conducting experiments on "re-wiring" their brains to promote happiness. In biology class, they are studying the neuroscience of the teenage brain.
Student-Led Conferences are next week March 1st-4th.
Look for an email coming from your student's teachers soon and feel free to reach out to them. So what is an SLC? Watch this video to learn more.
HTH teachers and staff found a Valentine's surprise in their mailbox last weekend! Beautiful cards and a Starbucks gift card courtesy of the HTH Parent Association. Response from the staff:

  • Thanks for facilitating this, it is super generous and very nice! I really appreciate it:) - Jake Anderson
Thank you to HTH parent volunteer Cindy Borkum for coordinating!

In the fall, the new 11-mile Trolley extension from Old Town to UTC will open. And, this summer, MTS and the North County Transit District (NCTD) will be implementing a new fare collection system called PRONTO,  the new system includes real-time, cloud-based account management and a new web portal.

Our current Compass Card fare collection system is at the end of its useful life and must be retired.

DEEPER LEARNING

Taking A Look At The School To Prison Pipeline

By: Lucía C. López, HTH Student Journalist

“I attended a high school that had a majority of economically disadvantaged students, including myself. I always felt that I was looked at differently because of the color of my skin, but I was never a victim of racial discrimination in my school experience.” says Ms. Taya Chase, 9th grade teacher at High Tech High. While everyone has a story of their own, it is most likely that many students today can relate to Ms. Chase’s experiences. Having that connection with a teacher who can help us through what they have already experienced is an immense amount more help than an A in a class in the long run.

Why you need Math therapy featured in Medium.com
by Sarah Strong, HTH Math Teacher

Math is powerful.

In the past year, we have seen its power wielded to model COVID-19 cases, systemic racism and injustice, and make predictions about elections. Math has furthermore been used in the quest for environmental justice as countries and communities work to make informed decisions about what shifts need to be made to combat climate change. Math is a powerful tool for identifying and making sense of the biggest problems facing humanity today.
