Message from Director Andrew Gloag:

Dear HTH families,
I want to take a minute to thank you for your patience and partnership over this past year. It was one of the most challenging school years I have ever seen in my 17 years at High Tech High. As both a parent myself and the HTH director, I applaud every single person in this community for working together to help our students not only survive this year but thrive.
Now as we go into the summer break, take some time for you and your families to relax and recharge. Enjoy the outdoors and some downtime.
We look forward to seeing everyone again on August 30th.
Andrew Gloag
Director, High Tech High
A few of our HTH Staff members are moving on after this school year ends. We say goodbye and thank you to Mike and Sarah Strong, Shameeka Lewis, Brian Delgado, Mark Aguirre, Glenn Evans, Chris Nho, Vusumundi Sibandi, Trelle Brown, Nira Chandrasekar and Sapna Ayer. We wish you all the best in your new roles!

Reflections from Mark Aguirre, 9th grade Humanities teacher:

What I appreciate the most about HTH is the freedom Larry gave us to discover what we could become as educators.

My favorite memories will always be Toga Night, moments after the performance- the kids so proud of their work and accomplishment. Every year everyone walking on air. Unforgettable.

What I will miss the most will be witnessing the growth of my students. Also the friendships I made.

My hope for HTH is that there is a return to the vision we had in those early years. We saw PBL as an equity project and we were given the freedom to find the best way to do that. We could have done better in some ways but we always tried to self-correct.

Final thoughts? My first year at HTH we were asked to create a short bio and include an inspirational quote (I think they wanted us to use Einstein or Lincoln or some such). Instead, I used the following from a Sinatra tune. I like it because it creates an expectation of how high my/our ceiling should be.
“You think you’ve flown before but you ain’t never left the ground.” The Best Is Yet To Come”, Frank Sinatra

From Trelle Brown, 12th grade academic coach:

What did you most appreciate about your time at HTH?
- I appreciated the opportunity to make genuine and meaningful connections with my students. Also, I appreciated assisting the Black Student Union and helping the organization grow.

Favorite memory?
- My favorite memory is the first moment I made a personal connection with a student (Zora Flynn) who helped me shape my education career.

What will you miss the most?
- I will miss the class of 2021 the most, as I have worked with these students since 2018. Aside from that, I’ll also miss the daily lunch runs to Trader Joe’s with my Inclusion family.

What is your advice for new teachers?
- My advice is to make genuine connections with students as much as possible, and also take time for yourself!

What is your hope for the HTH community?
- I hope the HTH community continues to reflect, improve, and do what works well for the betterment of our students!
DEEPER LEARNING

Fall Hopes

By: HTH Journalist Jack Brooks

After a year of online learning, hybrid classes, shortened sports seasons, and new experiences, students now look forward to what’s ahead next fall. Students have high hopes for what they want to accomplish next year, no matter what grade they’re in.

Despite the pandemic, great memories have been made throughout the year. Senior Kayla Manguil looks back on the time an entire team of students had a surprise in place for their teachers. “On the last day of school for the fall semester, my team had one last meeting so I organized a small surprise for the teachers. I emailed my entire team and told them to not turn their cameras on until they were given a cue. Once the cue was given, everyone turned their cameras on to show “thank you” signs. Both teachers and students ended up shedding a few tears and though that semester was entirely online, this experience made us realize how close we had become, even through zoom.”    Read more......
For current HTH students:
Summer Enrichment Camp
July 19-22 and 26-29

Two weeks aimed at boosting students' knowledge in reading, writing, science, and math by having them do fun, project-based work with their peers. Students from all grades will be able to sign up for the program and work on projects such as designing electronic circuits, writing slam poetry, and creating artwork for the school, with the idea of having embedded writing and math components. To register, use this form.

While there are tons of wonderful memories I've made here, there's one that sticks out to me the most. Online learning has been a struggle for everyone, so at the end of the first semester this year, I wanted to do something special for my teachers who worked so hard.
The night before our last meeting of the semester, I emailed all my peers to set up a surprise. The next day came and we all logged onto our meeting. Our teachers were confused as to why no one's cameras were on, but when given the signal, everyone turned their cameras on at the same time to reveal thank you signs from *almost* every student on the team. This memory sticks out to me most because as a daughter of a teacher, I know how difficult this year has been for them, and a lot of the time students don't notice/recognize everything teachers do for us. It was so nice to show appreciation to the people who literally work day and night for us.

I appreciate Sarah Strong because she's always been a teacher I can count on. I've had her 3 times in the past 4 years and she's helped me grow so much as a person and student. I knew I always had an adult in the school that I could trust because she was the kind of teacher who took the time to get to know her students on a more personal level. Thank you Sarah for all that you've done! :)
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
A piece of advice I would give to the incoming freshmen would be to sign up for and join tons of clubs! During my freshmen year, I signed up for about 7 clubs but only stuck with 2 for all of high school. I think that this is a great opportunity to meet new people while also discovering things you like/dislike and gaining meaningful experiences to put on college applications!

Rocketry in Sophomore year all the way. Everything about it, the class, the project, even the amazing teachers & student teacher that was their.
Tell us about an HTH teacher you appreciate and why
A current teacher at HTH would be Andrew Lerario, because since I had his class for the rocketry
and now my current Advisor, we've grew a great chemistry bond to a chance we'll probably meet once again later in the future. A teacher I appreciated and still honorable is Oscar Carrion. Now him pursuing in music with his fiancé, he still guide me through my early years in my high school career
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
Traditionally, your freshman year isn't going to look good, but still give it your best in which ever class you are in. You are now entering an important turning point in your lives, rather that'll be good or bad, anything can happen. Although, my advice to y'all is - to keep an open mind, work hard, and be smart about it.
COLLEGE NEWS
8 HTH Juniors were chosen to participate in the Elevate Scholars program next year. HTH Elevate Scholars are the HTH Network's highest performing students who are considered for the top scholarships from our college partners. Elevate Scholars participate in network-wide college and essay support services from May '21 through graduation.
Our seniors enjoyed a special lunch courtesy of HTH and the Parent Association. Some of our seniors were honored for being ambassadors, Mecha members and Key Club members. Seniors Sailor Brown and Shreena Bhakta each received a $500 college scholarship from the Point Loma Kiwanis for their leadership.
Traditionally, HTH Juniors and Seniors spend May/June doing an internship. The internship is meant to introduce the student to a field of employment that interests them. Our students have interned at Scripps Research, The California Innocence Project, SD Community Newspaper Group and more. Check out the HTH Internship website for more information.

I've really enjoyed being able to work at Ballast Point, as I've learned a lot of practical lab techniques, got real-world experience in a field I'm interested in, and built on my biology and chemistry knowledge. I've also greatly benefited from learning how to manage my own schedule, since I'm working two jobs and balancing all my schoolwork and extracurriculars as well. I’ve been learning a lot and having a blast in the lab!  - Sasha A'Hearn, 11th grade
