Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered. That was also about 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the Southern states.

It’s the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.

Congratulations to all our seniors! Class of 2021 celebrated today with a taco lunch, yearbook signing, and open mike. Senior Alani Bayha shows off the class t-shirt. Thank you to Alani and Yahir Bahena for creating the design. #hthpride #classof2021
Senior members of the Key Club and Ambassadors were honored and thanked for their service. Key Club Leaders Sailor Brown and Shreena Bhakta were awarded a $500 scholarship from the Point Loma Kiwanis Club. Woohoo!
10th Grade students on Lisa/Glenn's team presented the “Contracorriente”  Project - Spanish term that means ‘upstream’ or ‘against the current. In this project, students explored stereotypes and idealized images of San Diego and the United States, as well as other places in the world, seeking people's histories and counternarratives in contrast to the glossy surface images and stories. Students partnered with students from Colegio Monte Tabor in Santiago Chile to create podcasts. You can find those on Instagram or anywhere you get your podcasts.
Teacher Bonanza! Students and staff interview candidates for positions at High Tech High. The candidates teach demo lessons for students and then students interview the candidates in groups and individually and submit feedback for each candidate.

What are your plans for the fall?

I plan on attending The University of Texas at San Antonio! I have family out in San Antonio, so it works out for me!
Tell us about your favorite HTH memory
My favorite memory would have to be, my junior year where I was given the opportunity to film and direct a short video for the rocketry project. This event and memory is on top of my list of favorite HTH memory. I enjoyed the night and day spent out there, and I wasn't even looking forward to the actual rocket launches rather just being out there and shooting footage.

Tell us about an HTH teacher you appreciate and why
I mean I appreciate every one of my teachers. Every single one of my teachers had an impact, but I'd have to say, my Advisor/Teacher Jesse, she had given me a place where I can open up as I'm reserved at points, she encouraged me to pursue projects and even challenge myself in certain classes, but she helped me not only just by giving me a space to open up but she gave me the encouragement to work on certain projects. I can't thank her enough and I appreciate her insight and care for her students and advisees!
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
I want to keep it simple with one sentence. Don't slack, but you can relax, and just remain present in class.
What will you miss most about HTH
What I will miss most is just the non-school feeling. What I mean is that, during the time I was able to enter the building and sit down to get work done, it didn't feel like a traditional school. Friends of mine from other schools would complain how they didn't have a drive or the motivation to complete work or even attend class from time to time. HTH was definitely a totally different experience to what I've had in Elementary and Middle.
Jade Bentley
What are your plans for the fall? *
Attend UCLA, majoring in biology
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
Pursue your interests early while keeping your long term goals in mind.
What will you miss most about HTH
I am going to miss seeing many of my teachers and peers who have contributed so much to my personal and academic development.
Ian Wilkinson

Peter Jana, his class was the most fun
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
Freshman year is the worst, it only gets better
What will you miss most about HTH
The community aspect
Lizbeth Rocha
What are your plans for the fall? *
Attend CSU Los Angeles
Tell us about your favorite HTH memory
My favorite moment has to be when our class year had gone to the beach in our sophomore year.
Tell us about an HTH teacher you appreciate and why
Two teachers I appreciate the most and will miss so much is Lisa Griffin and Sarah Strong. Sarah had been my math teacher in all my 4 years of HTH and is the most helpful and encouraging math teacher I've had, I was able to get to know Sarah and hope to consider her as a friend after graduation and I will absolutely miss Sarah's jokes. LISA!!!
I had Lisa in my sophomore year at HTH and sophomore year was my favorite year and also not so emotionally great but I feel I was able to get through it with Lisa's understanding, kindness, and support. Because of Lisa I was also able to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and what I wanted to study in college.
What is your advice for the incoming 9th grade HTH students?
I have advice for my freshman that didn't come from HTH system. I know having to move to a completely different system and you might feel overwhelmed because it's a new and different environment but you will learn more about yourself and can change you in a good way. It is okay to feel overwhelmed but know that it is absolutely and perfectly fine to ask for help. Finally, work hard, do your best to be successful not for others, but for yourself.
COLLEGE NEWS

Traditionally, HTH Juniors and Seniors spend May/June doing an internship. The internship is meant to introduce the student to a field of employment that interests them. Our students have interned at Scripps Research, The California Innocence Project, SD Community Newspaper Group and more. Check out the HTH Internship website for more information. This year, some of our Juniors and Seniors did internships and some spent May/June in intensive College Workshops and doing personal projects. 12th grade student Kayla Manguil interned at Explorer Elementary School.

Graduation is coming up on June 25th at 10am. Seniors should check their inbox for details.

And we are inviting our Class of 2020 alums back to campus in August.

Season Wrap Up Notes from the coaches:

Softball - Congratulations to Tiare Rieger and Riley Lenahan for making All-League 1st team for softball. Congrats also to Lydya White and Leah Sample making the 2nd team. Thanks to all the players who came out this season , it was great - Coach Whitney Wilkinson

Cross Country - On Saturday, June 12th High Tech High runners competed in the CIF San Diego Section Finals at Valley Center High School. The day was kicked off with Kai Lange-Dei competing as the only freshman runner in the 1600 meters (1 mile). The race was a great capstone for the strongest freshman campaign in school history. Kai finishes with season bests of 4:41 (1600m), 10:24 (3200m) and 2:13 (800m). Following the mile race, Doug Frattini-Edwards raced in the 800m championship race. The season has been a successful comeback for Doug, who also contributed to our 4x400m team with the fastest splits of the year. Toward the end of the meet the crowd was treated with some of the best 3200m fields in San Diego history. Senior Iris Abegglen (signed with UC Santa Cruz) ran a tough and aggressive two mile race to earn a fourth place medal in a personal record 11:32. Her fifteen second improvement is an incredible finale to a history-making senior year where she also ran 5:25 for the mile. HTH's final race of the day was the boy's 3200 meter run where HTHI junior Nate Osborn established himself as one of the best runners in the state of California. As the meet announcer shared, the race was the showcase event of San Diego track and field this season. Nate ran the entire race with the lead group, challenging for the lead and eventually closing with a 26 second personal record. His 9:15 two mile is a new school record and places him on the Prep Cal Track elite list for 2021. Nate will continue his season at the San Diego Master's Meet at University City High School on Saturday June, 19th.

Boys Waterpolo -  the boy’s season came to an end on Friday, but it was not without a fight. Friday’s game was a CIF quarterfinal game where the HTH (#8 Seed) faced off against the undefeated Hilltop High School team (#1 Seed). This was the same team we lost 16-4 at the beginning of the season. This time around it was a little different. This time we found ourselves down 8-5 with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but somehow, we managed to score three straight goals at the end of regulation, including the final one with less than one second left (0.19 seconds to be exact) to force an overtime. Unfortunately, we fell short in overtime and lost 12-10.  The boys put on quite a show for all those in attendance and I am proud of their efforts.

STORM Baseball had a fun season!  The guys showed great teamwork and never gave up, despite some tough opposition.  Many thanks to our coaches, and a special Thank You to announcer Jack Brooks who added a fun and professional touch to our home games!  We wish our seniors Miguel Amador, Tramel Conners, Matt Flickinger, and Donnie Sullivan all the best!  We hope to add some new players, so spread the word and come join us next year!
