HTH HAPPENINGS THIS PAST WEEK!
From our Director Andrew Gloag: I just want to celebrate the amazing job everyone did at the exhibition over the last two nights. The students worked so hard to make wonderful displays and every single adult in the building could be seen working with students to help them on this. They were all so very proud of everything they have done, and I commend all of you for getting them to this point in what has been an incredibly difficult semester. What an amazing Exhibition 2021! I wish everyone a happy and healthy winter break! See you January 4th.

The Holy Cows co-hosted and participated in Battle at the Border where we competed with 20 other teams from around San Diego County.  Hosting or participating in off-season events is always a wonderful way to get new members exposed to what competitions are really like.  It was certainly a fun event and a notable bonding experience for all of our members, both rookie and veteran.
On November 20th and 21st, we hosted our annual FLL tournaments at High Tech High Mesa.  These tournaments are hosted for elementary and middle school students to compete with their lego robots against other students from around the county.  With COVID restrictions in place, the event looked a little different... Over the two days, we hosted a total of 98 teams throughout the weekend.  48 teams attended remotely and participated over Zoom while the rest joined us for a hybrid-style event and competed in person.

HTH SCUBA needs your help!
The HTH SCUBA club is a student-led non-profit in which students SCUBA dive, snorkel and create a meaningful and fun educational experience to help better understand the marine environment and world around them better. Students need to observe the underwater world with their own eyes not only to inspire themselves but others as well! In order to get all club members, SCUBA certified we are holding a fundraising sale known as The SCUBA Snack Shack. We welcome all donations and mentorship!

The HTH Food Review

By: HTH Student Journalist Jack Brooks

When you walk through the hallways of HTH, you’ll likely pass by Marcus Bell’s office and see a basket of snacks waiting for students to enjoy. These snacks include oranges, apples, bananas, pastries, bars, and so much more. While most students just grab the snacks and go, Sophomores Alex Becerra and George Wilber found a creative outlet that was right in front of them this whole time.

“We were just talking in Math class and we thought of the idea to make a TikTok page to review the food that Marcus puts outside of his office,” George says. “We decided it would be really fun, so we decided to do it.” At that point, the HTH Food Review was born.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
MEET MS. TAYA CHASE, 9TH GRADE HUMANITIES TEACHER

Where did you grow up?
Humboldt County, California

Why did you choose to work in education?
I got my degree in Criminal Justice and worked in the San Diego County Superior Courts for 6 years. After spending a lot of time with adult criminal offenders, I decided I wanted to make a different with a younger population. It was the best career decision I've ever made!
What do you love most about HTH?
I love that HTH allows teachers the freedom to personalize projects according to students' needs and interests. I love that students own their learning and are able to see the value of integrated projects.

What's your favorite food?
I love all kinds of food. Some of my favorites are Thai, Mexican, and sushi!

COLLEGE NEWS

December 16th, 2021

HTH Families and Students,

First, we want to wish everyone a happy and healthy winter break! Our seniors are just about done with their college applications and are definitely in need of some well deserved rest.

Hopefully you joined us for the HTH Village Virtual Family College Advising Night (for grades 9-11) last week. But if you missed it, Click here for the recordings and presentations.  There are some great nuggets of wisdom in there and well worth watching.

Enjoy the break and we look forward to seeing the Senior Bell ringing in January!

Congratulations on a THRILLING victory for STORM Boys Soccer over Mount Miguel High School. We tied 1-1 in regulation, 0-0 after 10 minutes of overtime, and won 5-4 in penalty kicks. The win qualified the team to play in the Finals against Kearny High School. It was a loss, but the Storm took second place in the Francis Parker cup. Woohoo!

STORM GIRLS WATER POLO
By STORM Sports Journalist Jack Brooks

The High Tech High STORM Boys Varsity Basketball team had a game against the O'Farrell Falcons on Tuesday, December 7th. The matchup was the first of three home games this week. STORM started strong, ending the first quarter up 18-5, and never let their foot off the gas. By half-time, STORM had a 43-9 lead! They then cruised to a 69-25 victory, improving to a 4-2 record. Junior Weldon Cook shared his thoughts after the game. “We did great…It was a great game and I’m proud of the guys, and let’s just keep it going this season,” Weldon said. When asked about the packed schedule heading into league play, Weldon offered, “I’m not worried at all. As long as we keep putting in work at practice, over time we’ll get it done on the court, and we’ll put on a show for our fans and for Shad.”
