HTH HAPPENINGS THIS PAST WEEK!
9th grade students on Amilio/Taya and Juli's team are researching water, how it is used, where it comes from and how it is distributed. Part of the research included snorkeling at Mission Bay.
10th grade Ryan, Molly, and Anna's team headed to the Escape Room at Belmont Park to do research for their Escape Room Project. The Dollars For Doers fundraising campaign provided funds for this field trip in the form of teacher/staff grants.

Changing The Subject, Twenty years of projects from HTH

A cross between an art book and a how-to-manual, this beautifully designed volume features some of the most creative and inspiring student projects from the award-winning High Tech High schools in San Diego, California. With contributions from over fifty teachers, spanning grades K through high school, Changing the Subject is filled with images of student work and students working together.

The book is available on Amazon
COVID-19 Testing

We are offering FREE antigen testing on most campuses on Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays (7:30-9:30).  All staff and students can test during those hours. Staff and students that registered or were here last school year will have to register again.
But once you do that registration and consent is good for the 2021-2022 school year.  Please register on the Primary Health website.
Registration Landing Page  - https://my.primary.health/l/HighTechHigh

Required for testing:  Students that are on modified quarantine or participating in indoor sports can use our onsite antigen tests, as well as staff that are unvaccinated.  If a student or staff member has COVID symptoms, they must go home and return with a PCR test through a County site, pharmacy or physician.

Any student or staff that just wanted to test preventatively may do so on campus.

Beauty; And The Science Behind It

By: HTH Journalist Lucía C. López

"It's not often that we are willing to admit it—or even talk about it—especially if we're on the receiving end of its benefits."(MyImperfectLife.com ) Pretty privilege.

This term of pretty privilege is defined by the article “Pretty Privilege: Why Bias Is Real and What We Can Do About It”  as individuals who “...often experience social advantages and better treatment by those who perceive them as attractive.” This term has been prevalent in the media, but is there actual science behind it?

What is the Poker and Board Games X-Block?

By HTH Journalist Mia Dahlgren

Poker and Board Games is “a time made for students to connect with other students through family fun!” That’s according to Michael Chin, a 10th grade chemistry teacher at HTH and the co-leader of these last 40 minutes every Tuesday and Thursday.

This X-block started when Michael and 10th grade math teacher Molly Poole learned that a previous teacher had run a poker X-block, “so, I wanted to keep that alive, because I knew there were certain students that were really into it. And, I think it's just something that I really enjoy in my free time, and I felt like maybe poker wasn’t wide enough as an X-block, so I decided to put in board games, because, as you can see, I have a pretty big board game collection.”

Jessica Morris, Mental Health Counselor at High Tech High

Why did you choose to work in education?

I struggled in school growing up and know how valuable having influential, supportive individuals can be for young folks.
What are your hopes for this school year?
To reach as many students we can, providing support to promote mental health, while providing a safe place for them to share.
What do you love most about HTH?
The collaborative and supportive work environment.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself
I coached lacrosse for 19 years at Coronado High School.
If you were a tree, what kind would you be and why?
An elm because they are strong, sturdy, and seem to be able to take on whatever element comes their way.
PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWS
With your generous donation, the campaign raised an amazing $15,279. Wow! We cannot thank you enough for your support. We want to share with you how your funds will be used to support HTH students.

Teacher/Staff Grants - $10,000 will be set aside for teacher/staff grants which send the funds directly back into the classroom. So far, this year, the grants approved are:
  • 10th-grade field trip to an Escape Room for research for the Escape Room project
  • Additional copies of books for the 11th-grade book club with Margaret Egler
  • new tools for John Santos/Pat Holder's Communification Project
  • Ionic compounds for experiments in the 10th-grade Chemistry class with Michael Chin
  • Plants and ecosystem supplies for Kalle Palmer's Let It Grow Project
You can check out all the projects funded through this campaign here.

HTH Collaborative - In addition to the projects, a portion of the proceeds funds the HTH Collaborative which provides help for our HTH families in need. So far this year, the HTH Collaborative has donated funds to help two HTH families cover funeral expenses for loved ones including HTH 2021 graduate Shad Jean Philippe and funded our inclusion team's request for a new software program that will help many of our students.

529 Seed Program - We are also setting aside $2,000 to seed 529 accounts for our HTH students.
College doesn't have to be expensive. This year, the HTH Collaborative will be offering seed money and grants towards college tuition. You can watch a recording of the info session here. The Spanish presentation starts about 1 hour in. Deadline to open an account and qualify for seed money is October 31st, 2021.

The first Family Partnership Project launched this month! The family cohort met online for the first session and learned about project design, definitions of art, and their feelings about being artists. 12th-grade art teacher Lucera Gallegos is guiding the cohort which will create an art piece that will be on display during the all-school Exhibition.
