This experiment guided their understanding of atomic structure. Huge thank you to our 9th grade students on Taya, Juli and Amilio's team for picking up trash on the field every Friday!  11th grade students on the Jana/Palmer Team met with staff from the San Diego Natural History Museum and San Diego Canyonlands this week. Students will be developing content for upcoming citizen science initiatives for these local organizations. On this trip, students went to Ruffin Canyon and identified plants with Jon Rebman, the Curator of Botany for the Museum. Socratic seminar  in Genevieve's 10th grade chemistry class about the similarities and differences between “Western” science and Native science   Lisa's 10th-grade team learned about ethnobotany from Kumeyaay Community College instructor and Kumeyaay leader Richard Bugbee at Mission Trails Regional Park.  Students learned about the Kumeyaay cultural relationship to plants as food, medicine, tools, spiritual connection, clothing, and so much more while also considering our own families’ historical, cultural, and present relationship with plants.   Tara, Jordan and Lauren's 9th grade team headed to the local mountains to experience Freshman Wilderness Skills Day Santos/Holder 11th/12th grade Project Overview:  In this interdisciplinary project, Building Community, we will consider the value of relationships within  both human and biological communities. During the project, we will explore the roles that human and  natural systems play in our own lives, as well as those that they play in supporting healthy natural and  social environments on Earth. Relationships will also be studied as we design and build a product, which  will be planned to support key interactions in a local human or biological community, in collaboration  with local client WHAT IS A SLC (STUDENT LED CONFERENCE)? What are SLC's? and how can you support your student? Click here to listen to HTH Unboxed Podcast with Ron Berger COVID-19 Testing We are offering FREE antigen testing on most campuses on Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays (7:30-9:30).  All staff and students can test during those hours. Staff and students that registered or were here last school year will have to register again.  But once you do that registration and consent is good for the 2021-2022 school year.  Please register on the Primary Health website.  Registration Landing Page  - https://my.primary.health/l/HighTechHigh Required for testing:  Students that are on modified quarantine or participating in indoor sports can use our onsite antigen tests, as well as staff that are unvaccinated.  If a student or staff member has COVID symptoms, they must go home and return with a PCR test through a County site, pharmacy or physician.  Any student or staff that just wanted to test preventatively may do so on campus. DEEPER LEARNING Who Are The Faces That Help Keep HTH Going? By: Lucía C. López, HTH Journalist  Across social media, the trend "Devious Lick" has taken over. The Devious Lick trend is where students steal/damage school property and post videos on social media. Examples of this have been students stealing chairs, soap dispensers, supplies, even tables. Across the globe, students have been punished, some even arrested.  Even at our school, people have been affected by this trend. Toilets have repeatedly been clogged in bathrooms, and paper towels have been wasted. But while students have been damaging school property, it's not them that end up staying late after school to clean up the mess and unclog the toilets. The people and faces that stay and spend their time cleaning are sometimes hidden or forgotten behind the privilege we have as students to know that our bathrooms will be clean and ready for use the next day.  Meet Arcelia and Margarita. The First Full Year By: Jack Brooks, HTH Journalist  “Honestly, it’s a lot from what we had been doing for the past year or so, and now we’re 100% back...it’s overwhelming. But it’s not like we aren’t overjoyed to be back and hanging out with our friends, while also getting out of the house like we desperately want to just this past year. I think that everyone is re-adjusting to this normal that we were so used to before and it’s going to take some time before it feels like it did before COVID and the shutdown,” says Pearl Gifford.  March 2020, the WHO officially declares COVID-19 a pandemic, all HTH schools shut down.  When the pandemic began, 8th graders were nearly finished with middle school. When schools shut down, no one knew or expected it would last this long. August 2020, HTH announces it will start the year fully online and hope to return to in-person learning later in the year. April 2021, HTH goes back to school in a hybrid system for the remainder of the school year. August 30th, 2021, HTH returns for a full year of in-person school for the first time since 2019 and students who were 8th graders when the pandemic began finally get their first year of a full high school experience. PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWS Huge thank you to HTH seniors Larissa and Jahir for joining us at Ask Andrew and Cafecito Con Andrew to share their experiences with SLC (Student Led Conferences). Here is the recording if you missed it.  Cafecito begins at :54 minutes in. Next Ask Andrew October 13th at 6pm/7pm (Note the earlier time!)  College doesn't have to be expensive. This year, the HTH Collaborative will be offering seed money and grants towards college tuition. The first step to earning this is to join us at an info session!  Register for October 5th    at 12pm (English)  Register for October 13th   at 6pm (English) 7pm (Spanish) All sessions are virtual via zoom Registration is now OPEN for our first Family Partnership Project! This is an incredible opportunity to experience project-based learning just like your student. 12th-grade art teacher Lucera Gallegos will guide us through the design and creation process through the lens of family partnership. The 15 person cohort will create an art piece that will be exhibited at the all-school Exhibition in December. COLLEGE NEWS This past week started to look “normal” again with college reps visiting our HTH students on campus. The Johnson and Wales University rep was here this week along with many more. Be sure to log into your SCOIR account to see which reps are coming to visit. It’s a great chance to meet one on one with admissions.  Juniors -- take advantage of a free practice PSAT exam on Saturday, October 2nd or a strategy session October 9th via Revolution Prep.  It’s open to all HTH Village juniors and will be administered online.  Pre-registration is required: More information will be shared next week in junior classes regarding the upcoming Oct. 13 PSAT exam. HTH Surf Team - first practice was yesterday at Mission Beach The team is seeking girls and boys from all HTH high schools to join the surf team whether you're a skill-building beginner or a seasoned competitor! Covering the cost of the facilities and league fees are about $20,000 a semester.
